Jahangir Alam popularly known as Shraban is a Bangladeshi sitarist, composer, and music director whose artistic journey is rooted in the timeless traditions of Indian classical music and driven by a contemporary vision for the future of Bengali music.

He was introduced to music at a very early age within the family. Born in Faridpur, Jahangir Alam began his training on the sitar under the renowned Bangladeshi sitar player Firoz Khan.

Later, having received a scholarship from the Bengal Foundation he underwent long-term training in the sitar under the world-renowned sitar maestro Pandit Kushal Das.

He was the senior scholar of Bengal Foundation.

With the sitar as his primary instrument, Jahangir Alam explores the depth, emotion, and expressive possibilities of classical music while continuously seeking new musical languages. His work brings together the discipline of tradition and the freedom of contemporary composition, creating a distinctive sound that is both culturally rooted and forward-looking.

Beyond the stage, Jahangir Alam (Shraban) is deeply engaged in composition, music direction, and modern musical arrangement. His creative philosophy is centered on preserving the essence of traditional music while reimagining it through contemporary production, instrumentation, and sonic aesthetics.

At the heart of his artistic vision is a desire to take Bengali music beyond borders—to introduce its richness, emotion, and cultural identity to audiences around the world. Through original compositions and innovative musical collaborations, he seeks to build a meaningful connection between Bengal’s musical heritage and the global contemporary music landscape.

For Jahangir Alam  music is more than performance. It is a dialogue between tradition and innovation, heritage and modernity, roots and the world.

Currently, he is serving as an official at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, under the Ministry of Cultural Affairs of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.
